The Defense System

Module 2 of the Somatic Enneagram Method, The Defense System and How to Be with It, offers a profound exploration of the body's defense mechanisms and their role in emotional and physical responses. What You Will Experience
In Module 2, you will explore the intricate workings of the body's defense mechanisms and learn how they manifest as physical and emotional reactions. These defense systems often act as barriers to deeper healing, but by bringing conscious and compassionate awareness to them, you can unlock new levels of self-regulation and emotional resilience. Through a mix of practices, lectures, discussions, and type panel demonstrations, you will experience firsthand how to meet these bodily reactions with empathy and presence. This module offers both theoretical understanding and practical application, empowering you to facilitate meaningful change in yourself and your clients.

 

What You Will Gain


By participating in Module 2, you will develop the ability to locate and address the physical contractions and reactions that occur when a person is triggered. Without tending to these somatic responses, deeper transformative work can become blocked or stalled. Many people tend to avoid their defense systems, but this course will guide you on how to engage with them consciously and compassionately.

You will gain a toolkit of strategies to work with these defenses, facilitating lasting transformation for yourself and your clients, and allowing for greater emotional freedom and healing.

 

 



Key Learning Objectives:

 

  • Gain an understanding of the survival function of the Defense System and the three core operating systems: Idealization, Avoidance, and the Defense Mechanism itself.
  • Learn how dualism impacts decision-making and practice observing this in real-time situations.
  • Explore methods to strengthen clients' internal resources before addressing their avoidance patterns, minimizing the risk of re-traumatization.
  • Understand how moods shift in cycles and develop the capacity to open up to these changes, improving emotional and somatic self-regulation.
  • Learn to recognize and manage the somatic responses of fight, flight, and freeze, and teach your clients effective strategies to manage these reactions.
